How did OJ secure his freedom? One Word: Poetry

Simpson’s team use proven psychological ploy to achieve acquittal

Believe it or not, a growing body of research shows that people are more likely to believe a statement if it rhymes, and there’s no better example than one of the most reported court cases of the century: the trial of OJ Simpson.

NeuroScienceMarketing asked recently “What’s the most famous quote from the OJ Simpson “trial of the century?” Those of us old enough to have watched it on TV, or at lease followed the news accounts, would no doubt come up with, “If the gloves don’t fit, you must acquit!” This phrase, or a variation of it, was used by Simpson’s lawyer, Johnny Cochran. During the trial, Simpson made a show of struggling to fit into a glove linked to the murder. Simpson was acquitted, of course, and Cochran’s defense earned most of the credit for that outcome.

While the trial hinged on far more than that one phrase, its memorability and power stay with us. And, that’s no accident – statements that rhyme are more persuasive than the same statements without rhyme.

In a paper amusingly titled, Birds of a feather flock conjointly (?), researchers from Lafayette College showed that subjects found aphorisms more believable when they rhymed. Indeed, some of the most persistent examples of aphorism are statements like, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and, “Haste makes waste.” Not all aphorisms rhyme, of course, but we find those that do more likely to be true.

While rhyme may increase the memorability of a phrase, the authors of the paper attribute its power to our old friend, fluency (see, for example, Convince with Simple Fonts). Our brains don’t like to work, and things that are easier to process are preferred. In the case of the aphorism experiment, the apparent truthfulness of the rhyming statements was enhanced because they were more fluent – i.e., easier for the subjects’ brains to process.

Cochran may not have had access to that research, but he understood the power of rhyme. To offset his perception as an attention-getting, publicity-hungry lawyer focused on big-money cases, he once said,

“I work not only for the OJs, but also the No Js.”

That’s a particularly good turn of phrase, even beyond the prominent rhyme. “No Js” means nothing literal in English, but the listener immediately grasps the meaning, people who aren’t wealthy or famous. The use of an invented word or words used in an unusual manner shakes up our brain and makes us pay attention – see Shakespeare Copywriting.

Rhyming for fun and profit

When should you use rhyme in business or personal persuasion? First, like any verbal tool, a little goes a long way. One subtle rhyme in a slogan or a catch-phrase will make that phrase more believable. A rhyme could emphasize a product benefit or answer a common objection. You don’t want your whole pitch to be in verse – that will cause the listener to focus more on the mechanics of the delivery and wording rather than the message itself.

Here are a few ad slogans that incorporate rhyme:

Beauty outside. Beast inside.
(Apple Mac Pro)

I am what I am.
(Reebok)

Grace. Space. Pace.
(Jaguar)

These may not sound like Robert Frost, but they are probably a bit more fluent and memorable than non-rhyming alternatives. Certainly, Jaguar’s phrase works better than the equivalent,

Poise. Room. Speed.

Other Rhymes

We normally think of rhymes as last syllables that sound alike, but there are other kinds as well. Rhymer.com describes first-syllable rhyming words as having, “initial alliteration (the repetition of initial consonant sounds), initial assonance (the repetition of initial vowel sounds), and front rhyme (the succession of beginning sounds of words).”

Outwit. Outplay. Outlast.
(Survivor)

These less conventional rhymes weren’t tested in the study, but it would be no surprise to find that they enhanced fluency as well.

Meade Works The Crowd in New TV Special

Exciting Schedule of Tv Specials Announced

Next Wednesday (January 15th, 2014) sees the launch of David’s flagship documentary special David Meade: Crowd Control on BBC One.  With his amazing ability David Meade is a man who stands out in a crowd. He certainly couldn’t be accused of following the crowd, but can he harness its power?

The mentalist returns to BBC One Northern Ireland with a new one-hour special. David Meade: Crowd Control is on Wednesday, January 15 at 10.35pm but this time it’s not just David manipulating his audience as he investigates the science behind something the majority of us have been influenced by at some stage in our lives – crowd control.

To test his legendary powers of crowd manipulation, David takes to the stage in front of 8000 people at last year’s (2013) BBC Proms in The Park Northern Ireland. Can he really influence so many people?

During the programme, David will still wow viewers with his trademark experiments, but this time, he seeks the insights of leading experts and academics into the techniques that make us behave a certain way in crowds. Viewers get insider knowledge on how big business and big events can control our movement and habits.

With the new knowledge he puts some of these techniques to the test as he dons his fluorescent jacket and joins the experts as they look after the safety of more than 40,000 people during Culture Night on the streets of Belfast.

Are you in control of your mind when you go shopping? Do we think we’re free to make our own choices or is someone else influencing our subconscious and directing what products we see and what we buy – in both the physical environment and in the virtual shopping world.

David also looks at what happens when crowd control goes wrong and how people behave in crowded situations: are we free thinkers or do we ‘follow the crowd’ to fit in with everyone else – or for fear of not fitting in.

David said:

“This is unlike anything I’ve ever done before and I’ll be honest with you, I was very worried it wouldn’t work. I’m used to messing with people’s minds as a mentalist, but for the first time ever I tried to control a crowd of people without using any of my tricks or techniques. The results are a bit shocking! I didn’t just throw myself into the deep end though – I met with experts and academics from the world of crowd control beforehand and discovered all sorts of useful manipulation techniques and secrets – which I reveal in the show – so you can try them on your friends!”

During his investigations, the mentalist discovers there’s nothing new about trying to get the crowd on your side and also speaks to a leading expert about how cults end up following a strong leader and how they find new recruits.

And will David be able to influence a team of people and make them believe they’re better than the other crowd…?

David Meade: Crowd Control is on BBC One Northern Ireland on Wednesday, January 15 at 10.35pm.

Video – Use psychology to trick yourself thinner

The new year is well upon us, and some research shows that 92% of new years resolutions have already failed.

burn belly fat

The most popular resolution is almost certainly to lose weight, so I thought it might be useful to dedicate todays blog post to the proven science of how to lose weight, eat better, and be more healthy now and through all of 2014.

I bet your friends and colleagues would love to see this too, so remember to share!

The REAL science behind Man Flu

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Science Fact or Science Fiction?

blog-sicknote

My name is David Meade, and I am an MFS (Man Flu Survivor).  The condition is currently in remission, and I hope to get another few good weeks before it recurs.  I’m staying strong, taking one day at a time.

It’d be easy to scoff, but now there’s some proper science to back up the weary theory, Laura Donnelly of The Telegraph reports.  For years women have cried “man flu” when men make a fuss over a few sniffles.  But a new study suggests that men may actually suffer more when they are struck down with flu – because high levels of testosterone can weaken their immune response.

The study by Stanford University School of Medicine, examined the reactions of men and women to vaccination against flu.

It found women generally had a stronger antibody response to the jab than men, giving them better protection against the virus.

Men with lower testosterone levels also had a better immune response, more or less equivalent to that of women.

It has long been suggested that men might be more susceptible to bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infection than women are.

The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found women had higher blood levels of signaling proteins that immune cells pass back and forth, when the body is under threat.

Previous research has found that testosterone has anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting a possible interaction between the male sex hormone and immune response.

Professor of microbiology and immunology Mark Davis said: “This is the first study to show an explicit correlation between testosterone levels, gene expression and immune responsiveness in humans.

“It could be food for thought to all the testosterone-supplement takers out there.”

Scientists said they were left perplexed as why evolution would designed a hormone that enhances classic male sexual characteristics – such as muscle strength, beard growth and risk-taking propensity – yet left them with a weaker immune system.

Previous studies have found that while women may accuse men of exaggerating when they have flu, females who are more likely to admit to having sniffles and sneezes.

The research, carried out by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine last winter, shows that women are are 16 per cent more likely to say they are ill.

How to make water DISAPPEAR

Mystify the masses  – with the miracle of science!

If there’s one question I’m asked most, it’s “David, how can I make boiling hot water disappear into thin air using a water pistol and an ambient outdoor temperature of zero degrees centigrade?”

Well, it’s time to lift the lid.  Marvel in the wonder of physics!

Afraid of public speaking? Don’t watch this… Director Michael Bay

Cringe Alert! Michael Bay has mini meltdown on stage in front of thousands at Las Vegas CES

Yesterday, internationally acclaimed director/producer Michael Bay of Transformers fame suffered – and I use the word suffered quite deliberately – from everyone’s worst nightmare.  Imagine standing in front of thousands of peers, critics, and journalists – and drawing a complete blank.  To be fair to Michael, his Autocue (a device used in live and televised events to feed a speaker his script on a screen) had clearly failed in some way.  Still though, you would think he’d make more of an attempt to fill, wing it, or even just make stuff up.

And for the record, in the last year my largest audience size was 8000 people, and the smallest was just 6 company directors, and I feel the exact same momentary terror in the moments before I walk out and start.  It’s part of what makes speaking and performing as rewarding as it is terrifying.

UPDATE UPDATE

Michael Bay has commented on this experience in a statement, saying;

Wow! I just embarrassed myself at CES – I was about to speak for Samsung for this awesome Curved 105-inch UHD TV. I rarely lend my name to any products, but this one is just stellar. I got so excited to talk, that I skipped over the Exec VP’s intro line and then the teleprompter got lost. Then the prompter went up and down – then I walked off. I guess live shows aren’t my thing.

But I’m doing a special curved screen experience with Samsung and Transformers 4 footage that will be traveling around the world.

Michael

Chin up Michael – could happen to the best of us!

Make Your Day Unforgettable

Blow your guests away

3L4F8365a

Message from David

Hi there! David here, and thanks for visiting this page.  Over the last few years I’ve received tons of requests to appear at weddings, but given my filming schedule and the amount of time I spend travelling I’ve only ever been able to do one or two a year.  This year though (because my tv show has been filmed earlier in the year than usual), I’ll be offering my interactive mindreading show for wedding performances, and I’m really excited to be able to open it to booking now.

My act is 100% inoffensive, and perfect for a family audience.  It’s designed to break the ice and give the two families tons to talk about through the rest of your big day, and they end up being the stars of the show.  No one is ever embarrassed or made fun of – quite the opposite – just 5 minutes into the show you’ll see even your shyest friends and family putting their hands up to take part.

Once you’re ready to book, click the green button at the top of this page and get in touch.  My office will organise a call where we can chat through every detail of your day, and we can start to plan what will work best for you and your guests.  My goal is to make your job easier, not harder, so drop us a line and lets get planning.

Good luck with the rest of your plans, David.

Why Book David?

Treat your guests to the ultimate wedding day surprise, with a performance designed specifically to make your special day the talk of your friends and family for years to come.

So many times we are told that David is cited as the highlight of the day, and the one thing people talk about years after.  It’s perfect for weddings as it’s 100% clean, very interactive, and really gives guests some wow factor to talk about.  You’ll see exactly the material he’s been made famous for on TV.

David is the perfect solution to keep guests entertained in the middle of the day, or for after dinner.

What happy couples say…

Just a wee note to say a massive ‘thank you’ for making our wedding day so memorable and special. We can’t emphasise enough, how much your amazing performance impacted on us and our guests. We laughed a lot and guests have talked about nothing else since and are still mesmerised at how you managed to do what you did !!
Without a doubt, we would highly recommend you for those brides and grooms who wish to add the extra wow factor to their big day
Victoria Dallas, Bride & Professional Wedding Planner

We needed something that would blow our guests away, and had to book a year in advance to secure him. One word to sum up David AMAZING – he got our whole wedding party involved and mixing with one another, they were blown away and crying with laughter.  To be very honest we still sit at the kitchen table when friends and family are around and still talk about how he does it. It is truly amazing.
Caroline McCusker, Bride

Wow is all I can say! We managed to keep it a complete surprise, and no one knew you were coming.  The minute you entered the room the jaws hit the floor and didn’t close for nearly an hour.  Your show was perfect for us as we have a big mix of ages, and everyone said it was the perfect way to fill in the dead time in the middle of the day.  The bit you did with the mask was hilarious! Thanks so much – we’ve watched the video over and over again!
Gemma Doyle, Bride
.
I bought David’s performance as a surprise wedding present for my daughter and her fiancee, and it was just fantastic.  Her friends had booked singing waiters, string quartets, and all the usual things for their weddings before but we wanted something properly different and David was just perfect.  Would highly recommend for anyone who wants their day to really stand out.
Eva Richie, Bride
.
The show was incredible, 100 times better than seeing David on TV.  The show was so funny, and perfect for all of the ages we had in the room.  It really brought the whole room together and was a fantastic to fill the dead time in the middle of the day. I’d recommend it to anyone!
Emma Hayes, Bride
.
You absolutely made our day – we’ve watched the wedding video four times now and still cant understand how you did it all! It was an amazing surprise for our guests to have you there, and they’re still talking about it today.  We can’t thank you enough.
Mark Connolly, Groom
.
We booked David solely on the recommendation of a friend and he completely blew us all away.  He manages to be funny and amazing at the same time, it’s all in good taste, and the ending just blew us away! Can’t wait to see you again!
